Tomato cages are fine (any garden department should carry them) if you have plants that do not grow too tall. this year my Early Girl plants shot up two feet over the tops of my cages and stalks are breaking off!
My father-in-law has his tomatoes in wooden frames that he built; essentially 12" square frames of 1" x 1" lumber with 4' legs. The squares are nailed together; the legs are attached on the outside at the corners. He screwed them together which allows him to dismantle them in the fall and store them away in a smaller space. I know this sounds like a lot of work but it could be worth it if you grow tomatoes year after year.

I have found that tomato cages are readily available at hardware stores - but usually are easier to find int the spring when people are planting stuff, and places run out of them later in the summer. I had good luck a few years ago when I needed some late in the season - I went to a small local hardware store rather than one of the big chains. The owner had squirreled some cages away in the back room after the demand went down, so I was able to get those.

A couple of years ago I bought two 2"X12"X8' treated boards and cut them into 1 1/2 inch pieces 8 ft. long. I use an iron pole to create a hole next to my tomato plants about 15-18 in. deep for the wood pole then tie my tomato plants to it using strips I tear from an old sheet. The poles last forever if you pull them every fall and store them until next spring. Works for me.

Hello,
I Use poles stuck in the ground and use soft material to tie up your plants this way they are a lot easier to pick and not in-closed! You can use tobacco sticks, bamboo or really anything!! God Luck and Happy tomato eating!!

Here is a good site for tomato and plant cages and supports.

I especially like the expandable pea fence because you can use if for just about any plant and you can make it any shape or size you wish. I not only use them for tomato support, but I use them for a temporary fence when I need one.

They're called tomato cages. You can get them at any home and garden store such as Home Depot or Lowes.

I use these for staking my tomatoes, cukes, peppers, zucchini, summer squash, etc. They are very durable and I have been very happy with them.
