I have a song in my head & I don't have a keyboard or piano, but I don't want to forget it. Any ideas about a computer program that would display keys on the desktop?

Hi Loki, I think I know exactly what's wrong with your system as I had a similar problem (with the exact same symptoms) a few years ago. There's also a way to test it - but the bad news is that I think you'll need a replacement graphics card. First of all, after dusting off all your components while the computer is switched off (and maybe leaving the case open to cool it, make sure there's no dust!), see if the problem still occurs. Try it with some CPU intensive games like Starcraft II with the graphics on low. This will tax your system's CPU but NOT your GPU as games like SC2 (and Minecraft to an extent) aren't super-taxing on your graphics card. I think you'll find that these games on low graphics settings won't actually cause your computer to freeze nearly as often. Basically, your graphics card has indeed been overheating as posts above suggest, BUT after a while of this happening permanent damage starts being done to the graphics card. I think the consistent freezes, especially if it happens when not running a game or similar, means that the graphics card is causing a basic hardware-related crash which isn't too surprising considering that the problem has existed for a while. The ultimate test, of course, is to take your graphics card out entirely and use your motherboard's on-board graphics to see if the crash continues to occur - you probably won't be able to play games on any decent quality at all but I bet the crashes stop. Sorry for the potentially bad news, but I hope it helps diagnose the problem. Please best-answer me if I've been of help! :-)

I know on Garage Band (comes with Macs or IBooks or something, I HATE THEM) you can use a keyboard to make music.
