M-5 is a bigger chassis and is better than 540i M-5 has larger rims bigger wider tires better suspension. All above are available with V-8 engines and your M-3 has a in line 6 engine that is not slow by any measure. Go on line "Nuremberg ring taxi" Video there will show you just what the M-3 ring taxi can do. Hey Very nice dad! Attend a performance driving school please! The Drivers Edge dot com. Or a Road course drivers school near you.

I want to just reiterate what John Paul has just said. Go to a performance driving school. Do the safety classes as a minimum. A few thousand bucks on a driver will almost always be better than throwing a few thousand into your car.

That being said, M3 is a coupe, where the M5 is available only as a sedan. The engine in the current M3 has about 333 hp, and the one in the M5 will be about 500.

The 540 is part of bmw's 5 series. Its the model under the M5. While the M3 has a 6cyl, the 540 has an 8, and the M5 will have a 10. I'm sure you already know how they sound :)

Better is subjective. Heres what I think:

540i
I like the M3 more, I feel likes its more of a true sports car. Drive safe, and enjoy your car.

First, I'll tell you the low-down on the cars

BMW M5
5.0 liter V10
500HP
389 LB-FT torque
0-60 4.6 seconds
The BMW M5 is a large sedan super car with an extremely powerful engine.

BMW M3(I will assume you are talking about the new one)
4.0 liter V8
415 HP
295 LB-FT torque
0-60 4.5-4.8 seconds

On the whole, the cars are really similar in a straight line race. If you were to take these two cars to the track, the M3 would beat the M5 due to lower weight, better power to weight ratio etc.
The M3's lateral acceleration and slalom speed is also better than the M5's.
Overall the M3 is a more sporty car than the M5.

You cant really compare the M5 to the 540i,
the M5 is a "super car' whereas the 540i is a luxury sedan. With a 4.? liter V8 the 540i sedan's acceleration is somewhere in the 6 second range and as stated above, the M5's is in the 4 second range.
Out of all of those cars, I would rather have the M3,
Its faster, cheaper, sportier, cooler-looking, newer etc. than the M5 and I like it a lot, but quite honesty, I would prefer a BMW 335i, regardless to all of the M3's power, it still doesn't have as much torque as the 335i.
Anyway, that's just my opinion, congrats on your car!!

The V10 M5 has better straight line acceleration (0-60 in 4.5s) than the V8 M3 (0-60 in 4.8). However, surprisingly, the M3 does better on the ractrack than the M5, since recent tests have shown that its 3 seconds faster around the Nurburgring Nordshlife than the M5. Personally, if you dont mind the coupe, I would go with the M3, but if u need size, the M5 is the way to go. The M5 is better than the 540i in every way, assuming they are in the same year. Its faster, sportier, and more of a man's car than the 540.

The m5 has an edge on both of them. The 540i doesnt stand even the slightest chance of coming close to the Motorsport class like the m3 and m5. m5 is also much bigger than the m3, and a bit faster.

You put a supercharger on any of them and 'faster' will lose it's meaning. Just a suggestion - if you are going to own a M3 or M5, do enough research to become an expert on them.

If you don't know, you shouldn't own one.
