Colon is spelled with 2 "o"s.
It depends on how the colon is used.
A colon can close main clause if it is followed by a list.
We produce three products: tissue, writing paper, wrapping paper. The leading word after the colon would
be lower cased in this situation, unless it was a proper name like Kleenex.
Sometimes a colon is used to restate the original clause. Stylebooks vary on how to punctuate this, so check your source. No matter how often she turned it over in her mind, Carol couldn't decide who was to blame: She couldn't decide whether to blame herself or Jim.
(I would prefer a semi-colon in the prior sentence)
If the colon precedes an indented long quote, the beginning of the quote is probably capitalized unless it begins with an ellipses which denotes beginning in the middle of a paragraph or sentence.

No, you don't use capital letters after colons. But you also don't say "mollie: a nice girl". You say "Mollie, a nice girl,..."
Colons are mostly used when listing items, eg. Yahoo's Website consists of: Mail, Answers, Sports, Personals, etc.

RE:
If you use a colen, do you need a capital letter after it? for instance, if you say "mollie: a nice girl" then
would "a" need to be capatilized?

If a proper sentence follows a colon then the rules of capitalization apply. Example:
Betty couldn't decide between three items: wheat bread, white bread, or German rye. (this is not a complete sentence so it needn't begin with capitalization.)
Betty couldn't decide: Should she buy wheat, white, or German rye? (This serves as a complete sentence, requiring capitalization.)
