I am intereseted in buying a 1976 MGB but do not want to invest too much money on it. I do not know anything about cars or mechanics and I am not entirely sure what is wrong with the electrical charging system (nor what it does). The seller says that it runs good despite this problem, I just don't want to run into bigger problems later on. Is this a major problem? Will it possibly be expensive? Thanks for any help you can offer.

unless the seller is your pastor or a trusted relative do you really believe them....if it is not running look at it like this....

engine problems, electrical problems, tranny problems,,,,etc.....unless you can rule out problems, if it doesn't run and you are unable to verify reliability then expect the worse and hope for the best.....

if this sounds like it is beyond your scope or wallet then i would pass......as for an answer to your question try (www.painlessperformance.com)

they have been producing replacement wiring systems for many years and would be an excellent source of help for you in making your decision.....they are more commonly know as painless wiring......good luck and enjoy the car, sounds like tons of fun......my dream is to build a 67 Cobra replica someday

It would be great to have an old car like that to cruise around in. The only trouble with that is if you don't know anything about working on cars then you should stay away unless you have deep pockets. With a car 31 years old, there are going to be a lot of parts that will fail and they may be hard to find. If they are hard to find, then they are expensive.

If you want to have this car as a project, then that is one thing, if you want to use this for your primary transportation then forget about it.

It seems you always had to work on the mid 70 cars, to keep them running.. Good luck with what ever you decide.

fixing the charging system on that vehicle is no big deal. It`s very basic Those cars are know for electrical problems . If the price is right i would go for it. Search around and see what the going price is and what you plan to invest. If you bail out how much you would lose

Any older vehicle will eventually be breaking down, if the battery is not charging you probably need to replace the alternator which should not cost more than $80 for the part and maybe $60-80 to have someone replace it for you....
