The deterrent effect of capital punishment is questionable at best. Violent crime rates are actually higher in death penalty states. This may seem counterintuitive, and there are many theories about why this is (Ted Bundy saw it as a challenge, so he chose Florida – the most active execution state at the time – to carry out his final murder spree).
Personally, I think it has to do with the hypocrisy of taking a stand against murder…by killing people. The government becomes the bad parent who says, ‘do as I say, not as I do.’

No, any punishment is only effective after the fact and the death penalty does nothing to prevent criminal activity.
I firmly believe that the only person responsible for the safety of you and your family is yourself and something as simple as locking the door or installing an alarm or getting a dog would have preventing this from happening.
To be quite honest, a wealthy doctor living in a wealthy neighborhood with a beautiful wife and two daughters with no security system, no fence, no dog and the doors unlocked, it was only a matter of time.
Only you are responsible for the safety of your family.

The death penalty is a deterrent only to sane people. Nothing is a deterrent to sociopaths. Would life without parole have stopped the killings? Justice is the main reason for the Death Penalty....

It's not about preventing a crime that already happened, it's about justice, and ensuring that that person never has the opportunity to commit another crime like this again. It's a sad fact, but you can't rehabilitate every criminal, and you have to do something with them. Personally, I believe the option should be left open for the victim's family. If they want them to spend their life in jail, so be it. If they want to watch them dance the old 'electric chicken', that's alright too.

I think we need to find out why they did this, give them help because they might prove they're worthy of mingling in society again, and pay for their medical care and education for the rest of their lives.
Whatcha think? To heck with the father and husband who might want that death sentence because in his mind, it might be justice served.
