Can I keep a gift card I get free with a product then return the product?

Say I buy a $20 gadget from Best Buy or Wal-Mart and they have a special promotional deal and I get a free $5 gift card with it. If I then take back the gadget, will I get my $20 back and keep the $5? Do they have any sort of regulations on that? If they realize I got $5 for free will they give me cash back if I return it the next day or week WITH the receipt? If not that, what about if I have a gift receipt for it?

Depending on their policies, they might give you back the full $20, or might deduct the gift card value and just refund $15.
