I have been wondering why are there small underlines on the letters of menu items. Can anyone tell me what do the small underlines do or why they are there?

If you are a Mozilla Firefox user, you should know what I'm talking about.

If you look closely at the Menu Bar, you notice that the F in File is underlined and E in Edit is underlined also.

MS WORD DOCS use the same process

► You can use the keyboard to select any menu command on the menu bar.
► Press ALT to select the menu bar.
► Press the letter that is underlined in the menu name that contains the command you want.
► In the menu that appears, press the letter underlined in the command name that you want.
