He made 4 5 and 6 in the 70's and 1 2 and 3 in recent years. Was this intentional

He says that he originally envisioned a 9 part series. It so happened that he was able to develop the 4th episode and sell it to 20th Century Fox. It was such a success that he went on to do the next two. He says these were the middle of what he had planned. The first 3 would set up the next 3 and the following 3 would be after the 2nd 3. Got it? Unfortunately he says that he will not do the last 3.

When Lucas came up with the Idea for Star Wars, they were not named episodes 4, 5, and 6. That came later. It was a story that he told his kids. After he developed the original triology, he decided that he wanted to go back and give background to how Darth Vader, and the rest of the Star Wars universe became.

Originally, he just made one movie, but decided it was too big so he broke it down into 6 parts. The story has always been there, I think he thought he would never be able to do all the movies, so he started with Episode 4.
