Peter, Using your chosen travel agency is going to cost you in the long run. Book your ticket into HCMC or Hanoi directly through a airline website and you will probably save over a$1000 a ticket right there. (Hanoi is closer by many miles and is sometimes less expensive) Once you are in country there are many agencys that have intimate knowledge of the country and its many varied attractions. I can give you a quick north to south idea for a tour. Kind of boiled down into a nut shell. Here goes.

Vietnam is the in place to visit right now. If you start in Hanoi make sure to take the night train to Sapa and stay at the Mountain View Hotel. (Great views and inexpensive) It could be the highlight of your trip. Take the 2 day tour to Halong Bay. Very nice. Then start south bound. I firmly believe that Hoi An is the best place to visit in Vietnam. The ancient town is a World Heritage city and absolutely beautiful. The beach is white sand and 40 kilometers long. Vietnam is really inexpensive. Hotels cost about $10 a night. You can find beer at less than 15 cents a glass. The people are wonderful. Pass on Nha Trang unless you like multi story buildings on the beach. Dalat is great and Saigon is always and experience. Phu Quoc was disappointing to me. They just don't have a clue as far as conservation and the beach's and harbors were filthy. The infrastructure is just not there yet but you can see that the island will be something special in the future. It’s not special now. The Mekong is great with lots of things to see but you can do it in a couple of days. You are going to have a great time. I went around the world to many different countries. I have been on the road for over a year. I chose to purchase a house in Hoian. It’s the best.

So that gives you a flash in the pan idea of what to do. If you book your tickets through the airline web sites it will save you some money over travel agencys fee driven schedualing. I can give you much more detail about places to visit and costs etc. if you wish. Just give me an email. I have great suggestions on packing and tips to make your trip easier and safer. And best of all. I don't charge a thing.

For example. If you book with Eva air or Vietnam airlines out of LA you can get a round trip ticket for about $1,100 taxes included. Thats to Saigon. Most travel agencys and even travelocity and the other "discount airfare companys" will cost $1500 to well over $2000. In some cases even over $3000. I have no Idea of your budget or ideas of comfort so just take this as a general guide to help you get your bearings. Good luck and happy traveling. If you still want a travel agent I know of two or three in the Southern California area.

If you are in the Boston area it is Viet Net Travel on Dorchester Ave. Great people and always the best price. In addition, they have a lot of family in Vietnam that can help you out when you arrive.
