Yes! Mattress pads are not waterproof and give a little extra padding to the mattress but still protects it somewhat from accidents. Mattress covers, at least most of the ones I've seen, cover the whole mattress in a sort of plastic sheeting to prevent moisture from accidents getting into the mattress itself.

A mattress pad just sits on top of the mattress, whereas a mattress cover, has fitted corners to help it stay on your mattress, like a fitted sheet does. A mattress cover is a must if you have cold weather in the winter. It helps keep a body warmer, much like flannel sheets do.
