Someone said I could use boric acid solution. How should I dilute it? And please explain in an understandable and simple way. For the turtle food, I have these pellets that aren't very good for turtles. Is there any way I can supplement vitamin A, calcium...etc. homemade or at home? Both of my turtles has a bit soft shell and more soft at the edge on top of the tail. I'm not sure if it's because it's a baby or what. Okay thanks.

Swollen eyes in baby Red-ear Sliders are usually a combination of poor diet and poor housing.

Turtles need three main things to be healthy:

1. Good water. Lots of good, clean, warm water. Aim for 10 gallons of water per inch of shell, heated to 75-80F. Clean it with a BIG, powerful filter (aim for 3x bigger than a fish tank uses).

2. Good sunlight. Turtles worship the sun. Make sure it has good basking sites that are warm and exposed to good fake sun- not just a plain light bulb. It is best if the lighting includes UVB rays.

3. Good food. Use a mix of about 1/2 good quality pellets (Reptomin or Mazuri are common), and 1/2 live or frozen/thawed 'fish foods' like shrimp, krill, small (very small) fish, worms (especially blood worms), etc.

Fixing this will fix most of the stuff, including the soft shell. However, they will not eat while the eyes are swollen.

To help get over the infection-
- Boost water temps to about 80-85F
- Get some cod-liver oil gel-caps and pop one over the eyes every day. Keep the turtle out of the water for about an hour after this.

The turtle will probably not eat as long as the eyes are swollen-this is sad but normal.

Is the eyes puffy or bulging eyes, redness around the eye lid, or closed eyes most of the time? If any of the above symtoms are present, this could be swollen eyes. This could be caused filthy water or chlorine water coming in contact with the slider, or even due to vitamin A deficiency. My advice to you is to get a strong filter to provide clean water, de-chlorine the water through adding the solution into the water and mix them well each time you change the water, and last but not least, provide diet such as cooked beef liver, carrot, spinach, and pumpkin to your turtle. However, I wouldn't worry if she is very active and feeding well though. Hope this helps!

I dunno about the boric acid solution, but I would advise you not to do anything you are not 100% sure about. You should probably take them to the vet about the eye.
On the food issue, I would feed them live guppies. This will be better then cheap pellets. It also gives the some exercise, which they need.

are you using tap water? if you are that may be the case. the chlorine in the water and really burn their eyes and make them swell. try purified water. or buy a solution for
TURTLES. or reptiles that eliminates chlorine in the water and other harmful things. hope this helps ... this has happened to me before.
