I was always told not to put potato peels down the garbage disposal because of the starch in the potatoes. I assume the starch could cause a problem with the drain and clog it up.

You can. However, try not to put them down by themselves alone as the gluten has a tendency to plug up the spinning cutter blades and plug up the drain holes a bit. Add egg shells a little at a time also. you can also use any thing with high acidity like cut up orange peels or lemon etc

the problem with any food going into a disposer is this. the disposer will chop and force food through the disposer but, you have to realize this food has to travel through 1 1/2 inch drain pipe (most common, new houses 2") from your kitchen to the main service line of your house. So the trick is to chop the food at the disposer, and by using alot of water, get it to drain into the 3" or 4" main service line in another part of the house. you have got to get it through the trap, 90 degree turns, and usually 40 to 50 feet of pipe to get there. in my opinion, disposers are great, but they keep me in business, sad but true, use at your own risk.
drain cleaner.

I do, for the last 7 years! Perhaps because composting them is more environment friendly? I have never had a problem with them....just tea bags, don't disposal them, the bag shreds and gets caught in the motor.

If you are on a septic system, it takes longer for the undigested stuff to decompose, if you have city sewer, you can shove the whole potato down it, if you want to.
