Open the hood, and on the driver side of the firewall, look for a silver box with hydraulic lines going into it next to the master cylinder.

Or, drive on a wet street and jam on the brakes and hold them. If it makes a pumping whine sound, it has abs.

hello. a 2000 anything is a 'used' car, how hard it was used is more important than its possible abs system. does it stop in a straight line is the better perspective to go with. Me? I have a corolla, a 2003. I bought it at my credit union or rather, the show the credit union was putting on for its members. I compared it against a VW passat, a car I'd read glowing reports of in the press. BUT, the corolla drove straighter, and accelrated BETTER than the Passat. My advice for you is, does the sportage feel 'right', if it does that's what 'matters'. how you drive it is more important than the gizmos it may have. Think right, be right. : }

if its a 2000 i can almost garuntee that it has abs. just type in 2000 kia sportage specs on google and you'll find it. you can go on a wet or icy road push the brakes on and hold your foot down. dont let up. if your car makes an almost grinding sound for about .5 seconds every second then you have them. plus you can completely feel the abs working.

When you turn the car on does an ABS light come on if it does then you should have ABS. You can also look under your hood for an ABS unit that would be near the engine.

get up to 25 mph on a straight stretch with nothing to hit on either side of the road. Slam on the brakes. If they pulsate you have working ABS... if they lock up and you start skidding... get off the brakes.. you don't have working ABS.

Works best if you know how to handle a skid...

ha ha! read the owners manual silly! really i wouldn't just try testing it just to find out. most newer cars have it. i highly doubt it would pass safety standards if it didn't.
