Will under gravel filter damage live plants in an aquarium?

Undergravels really aren't the best choice for a planted tank. While there is some debate to the pros and cons, most people agree that the cons do out weigh the pros for this situation.

While they don't directly damage the plants, roots can grow into the filter plate and clog it as well as make it practically impossible to remove the plant with much root left at all. Also, some think that the water flow over the plants roots is not good for the plants. That is still open to debate really.

I had a really rough time growing plants with a reverse undergravel filter, which blows the junk up out of the rocks instead of sucking it down through... I suppose that either way, plants just want their roots left alone in solid soil...

They won't damage them but they won't grow very well with one either. Very few people bother with undergravel filters in planted tanks.
