I know that i can't put a collar on a tortise, so i was wondering if there was any other way to put something similar on my tortise.

this is because we recently lost my tortise (he lives partially outside (and we just found him)), and want him to have something on him, so if he's found we can be contacted. thanks!

Some options:

1. Cheapest- paint the info on the shell. Use a 'human skin safe' product like plain acrylic paint. It will wear off, so repaint it as needed.

This paint will not hurt the tortoise, and this is what the professional breeders do.

2. 'Coolest'- Engrave a small dog tag and use quick set epoxy to glue it to the MIDDLE of ONE shell scale (scute). DO NOT let the glue spread past the very middle flat part of the scute- it will hurt the shell's growth if it does!

3. Dumbest- Injected ID tags do not track the animal, and only help if another vet with a tag reader sees the turtle and scans it. Also remember that not all readers read all tags!

4. Cheap Insurance-
- introduce your tortoise to the neighbors and their kids so if they find it they will return it and not freak out.
- prepare 'lost tortoise' flyers in advance so you can post them immediately if it gets lost. Make sure the local animal shelters get copies ASAP.

5. More expensive but good insurance- use the 2 wall idea. There should be 2 barriers between the tortoise and freedom. The most common solution is the pen wall and a yard fence (that you have carefully ensured is secure to the ground at all points!)

A suggestion that I recently read about in a veterinary magazine was to use a dog tag engraved with your info and attached to the back of the shell with 4 minute epoxy.

There is a way to affix ID tags to the shell of the tortoise, but it needs to be done by a vet or wildlife worker. Ask you vet for assistance.

Have your vet implant a tracking chip. The tortoise will be able to be tracked any place it goes. The chip has been very successful.
