You can put them in the dishwasher occasionally. Or I sometimes spray them with a household bleach cleaner when they're wet, then rinse them thoroughly. Rinsing them out really good after each use will keep them fresher also.

Bacteria is growing in the sponge, which is no good. It will spread all over each time you wipe something, instead of getting it clean. To avoid this, there are lots of different methods:

1. Replace your sponges regularly
2. Use an antibacterial dish soap. This will get into the sponge and help avoid some of the bacteria growing.
3. Throw the wet sponge in the microwave for about 30 seconds. This kills bacteria.
4. Soak the sponges in water with a little splash of bleach. Rinse them out thoroughly.
5. Run the sponge through the dishwasher now and then to kill bacteria. Put it in the silverware basket.

Using some of these methods regularly will help prevent your sponges from getting icky.

A sponge can be the most dangerous item in the kitchen, spreading germs everywhere it is used on a surface. Your sponge harbors germs and serves as a "petri dish" for growing more germs exponentially. It is necessary to stop the germs growth by sterilization. Simply rinse the sponge, put it in the microwave and hit the 2 minute button. Odor free, germ free!

I stick mine in the dishwasher or in with the laundry, every day, so that way they are getting rid of the bacteria that makes them smell bad and they won't just spread the germs onto more dishes and surfaces.

you're describing the presence of bacteria in your sponges.... when finished using them, rinse thoroughly and soak in water with a bit (teaspoon) of bleach...

they'll be ready to go the next time you want to wash dishes, without simply smearing old bacteria around on what you're trying to clean.
