I bought a new fish tank. The dimension are 30x12.5 inches. I wanted to buy a under gravel filter but none matches the same dimension. Should i buy a 48x13 inches or 30x12 inches. I was scared that the smaller one is too small and the bigger filter size will not fit my aquarium. Please help me!

The smaller is the one designed for your tank and will work well. The 1/2" difference allows you to have gravel along the front of the tank and the filter plate to be hidden.

I woudn't buy an undergraver filter if i were you....

Why not just use an internal powerhead filter? Just rainbar the output to minimize the power of the current.

Undergravel filtration, in my point of veiew, does not really work. It only bring all the sh*t to the bottom of the tank,.... where all the nitrates and nitrites will still be in the tank... and how are you gonna clean it?

Why not invest a little more and buy a canister or internal power filter?

You can clean it easily and you would solve the dimesion problems altogether! There are different sized filters for tanks of different dimensions! isn't it easier?

Buy the 30x12. That is the grid that was designed for your tank. You would have to do alot of cutting to get a 48" grid to fit in a 30" tank. Get a hang on the back filter, they are very good these days and are much easier to maintian. Hagen makes a superb model that is inexpensive. Look for the Aquaclear models.

Buy the smaller one. It is only 1/2 inch smaller! It will work fine. If you have never had fish before the real thing to remember is to feed them only a pinch of food once or twice a day or whatever they will eat in 5 minutes or so. Any left over food rots and will cloud your tank.

The store where you are buying this stuff should also be able to give you advice.

i would buy smaller, while you can easily cut the larger one to size, it is ok if it doesnt completely fits the bottom of the aquarium, just as long as it is there and has a powerhead to make it work.

But again both will work, one you will have to cut the other you wont.
