Well, I definitely agree with those who have said Green Day, but what about The Smashing Pumpkins? That band is one of the most influential bands in my opinion. They have inspired other great bands, such as My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, etc. Yes, they were formed before 1997, but they are still making music.
Speaking of My Chemical Romance, I also find them influential. There new album, The Black Parade, is very influential in my opinion for up and coming bands, and unlike some other groups, MCR has a great purpose, and although most of you cannot believe it, My Chemical Romance has saved lives with their music. Doesn't that count for something?

50's - Elvis
60's - Beatles
70's - Led Zeppelin
80's - Metallica
90's - Nirvana
00's - ???
Some decent songs and bands, but it's hard to think of anyone who really qualifies in this decade. But maybe that's just because we're in it and can't see where the influence is yet. Maybe in 10 years it will be obvious and it'll be easy to say, "well, everyone sounds like Linkin' Park now" or something. But if the best we can come up with (as far as I can see so far) is Green Day and the Chili Peppers, then it doesn't seem like there's anyone right now that comes close to approaching the level of the others on that list above.
Seems like this decade is more destined to be defined by American Idol . . .

The last decade is 1997-2007. It doesn't look like a lot of answers here stick to this. I'm going to say Radiohead. They would be the most frequently listed influence over the past ten years when bands are asked.

I hate to be a prick about this, but there really isn't a single band in the last ten years that has truly been influential. If you think otherwise that's great. Delusional can be cute sometimes, but from 1997 to 2007 the music industry has been drawing at straws...

No doubt...Why,because 2 out of every 3 bands selling millions of albums out there today sound JUST LIKE THEM.I figure they have a factory out there somewhere that uses a cookie cutter to turn them out by the bucketload with one employee to put various names on them.Probably all are recorded by the same L.A. studio band working directly for Sony Records. Two band examples Nickelback and FallOutBoy.But there are about 477,852 more I could cite.

Forget punk or emo whatever, Led Zeppelin continues to be the greatest band of all time. Influencial or not (they are). And Green Day sucks.
