A computer 'crash' can mean a number of things. It could be a temporary event requiring nothing more than a restart, or it could be a more serious problem that causes permanent damage. A hard drive crash is a completely separate thing. If your hard drive 'crashes', that usually means that it has broken and developed bad sectors that can no longer be read by the computer. If a computer will no longer load its operating system, that is a good sign that the hard drive is dead. If it will start fine, then just a software 'crash' has occurred.

A computer "crash" is an unrecoverable error when two programs try and address the same area of RAM. This is cured by a reboot, as \ram is flushed when the computer powers down.

A hard disk crash is a rare event, where the read/write heads touch the magnetic surface for an instant, ploughing a great furrow in it. Data CAN be retrieved but generally it is not economical for a private individual to do so. That's why backing up your data is so important.

In many years of computing it's only happened to me once, when I tried to resurrect an already archaic machine.
