I'm not sure about Japan, but in Europe, American citizens need working papers and identification cards. To get that you have to get a company in Europe to apply for your work permit.

Moving to a foreign country is much more difficult than most people realize. if you are wealthy, have a steady income, are retired with a pension...then you can probably meet the minimum income requirement most countries have. if you will need to work, in that country, you will find that you must be highly skilled in a work area that is in great demand there...Japan and European countries have very strict rules about this. You can do a web search...enter "embassy of Japan" or whaterver country you want to study, then read thru and find the visa requirements, immigration requirements for that country. You will find it is extremely difficult to meet these requirements. Also, salaries are lower and taxes higher in most other countries. If you are looking for a change, the U.S. s a huge country, try another area in the U.S....someplace really different than L.A. Or , try going to Puerto Rico, Guam, The Virgin Islands...one of the U.S. territories...where you do not need to meet immigration requirements. If you have never lived in a different area...only in L.A., you have a very limited view of the U.S...do consider trying a different area in the U.S.

Running away to Japan will solve nothing. It will make you just another of the many people who have also run away from something in their home country to come here with no other purpose than to try to escape some problem back home. Ther are far too many of these people in Japan already.
Come to Japan of course if you really want, but do it for the right reasons after you have settled your issues at home. Otherwise you'll find yourself trapped here with nothing to go home to.

Unless you have a BA / BS degree, there's little chance of making it in Japan. You just can't up and move there. A visitors visa is only good for 90 days. To get a work visa you need a job offer BEFORE you get there. Still want to go? I'm tired of America too. If it were easy to go to Japan, I'd be there myself.

First of all you would have to decide on a definative destination then.. apply for a VISA.
Hopefully you have enough money to get you from point A to point B and hopefully you have a job lined up at your destination because most places worth going to from here are astronomical in price

You need to check the immigration rules for the country where you want to live. They will have varying rules: who can immigrate, how long they can stay (permanent vs. temporary), rules for working in country, etc.

Go to the Japanese embassy in DC or nearest large city consulate website. They should have the rules for application on it or if not, you can call and request them

That site has some good basic info. I would also suggest calling the Japanese consulate. They can send you a complete information pack on how to get started with your application for immigration.
