My city at the end of the year will lose its afternoon paper due to declining circulation and the end of a joint printing agreement between the two papers. With the internet and the advent of 24 news on cable is that of particular concern for any of you who have seen similiar problems or do you see the papers as part of our past.

Point is having two editorial staff for most of us to look at issues differently. Even some news events are reported differently when you have two papers as I can remember on issues here like our airport and education issues.

My biggest thing was the lack of competition and the need for the editorial differences in two papers. Only papers can really give you the editorial page.

Afternoon papers are dying. The problem is that they can't compete with television. If something happens at 1 p.m. on a Tuesday, an afternoon paper can't tell people about it until 5 p.m. on Wednesday. In a day of TV (and now the Internet), they can't compete.

Morning newspapers can print overnight, so they can take advantage of the dead spot in news to print the paper.

While it's nice to have competition, there are plenty of other news sources out there -- radio, TV, Internet, etc. And it's not like many cities have two morning papers -- the business entry cost is just too high. So it's something we just have to accept.

I stopped getting the Atlanta Journal many years ago. Just a liberal and racist rag.
