Chances are, the selenoid (?sp) has gone bad. That's the little spring loaded gear that when you turn the key, comes out of the starter's motor and connects to the fly wheel, turning your engine over until it starts to run on gas instead of electricity. It's been a long while since I've had to replace one, but it should be about a fifty dollar item at your local auto parts store. If you don't know how to disconnect the battery and turn a few screws yourself, then take it to a reputable mechanic -- they'll charge about $90 per hour for labor.

The first thing I would check is your ignition switch. It sounds like you have a short in your solenoid wire.
