its pretty hard to score against a team that has their team all the way back. how will mexico overcome this and be ready for the counter in mexico vs usa next match?

would the outcome be different if both USA and MeXico both play at the midfield?

By having more effective strikers. No one can doubt the fact that Mexico always plays better than the United States. However, when it comes time to see who finished off their chances, it seems that the U.S. has more. So unitl Mexico can learn to put the chances they get on the scoreboard and force them out, the United State's strategy will keep working.

Scoring first should be an effective remedy to a "defend and counter strategy". Recall that in the Gold Cup final the Mexican team was the first to score. If the "defend and counter strategy" was all there was to the recent U.S. victories over Mexico, Mexico should have won that game at least.

I'm not saying the U.S. does not use the strategy you describe but I do claim there is another important factor that Mexico seems to overlook: fitness. I recently saw a game between Club America and Chelsea, Club America scored first but Chelsea won the game dominating the second half. The Chelsea players were clearly much better conditioned.

The U.S. has a number of very fast players - e.g. Beasley and Donovan - useful in a counter attacking strategy. The advantage in speed that the U.S. team enjoys actually increases over the course of the game. Mexico will probably never be able to match the speed of U.S. players, the U.S. simply produces too many world class sprinters. However, Mexico could make considerable improvements in the fitness level of its players. I would suggest that Mexico hire a first rate conditioning coach, perhaps even from the U.S., in order to get some expertise in this area.

This question was already answered by many people above me. The right answer is by capitalizing on the chances they get when they attack by actually scoring, then protecting the lead if necessary.

Carnaby_Fudge -

Borgetti - Is old and has an injury which means he will be replaced in Mexico's future matches by Nery Castillo. Borgetti will only play friendly matches when Nery can't come down.

Torrado - Is a great player and I wish Hugo gave him more play time too, but he gets taken out a lot because of yellow cards, or he accumulates them and can't attend the games.

Kikin - Is garbage and I hope he never plays for Mexico again. He had some small signs of Greatness during FIFA 06 but he's a candle who's only been getting dimmer. I was sure the only reason Hugo even called him to play was to try and get him to respond to him like he did in Pumas; he didn't and now he's gone. When he did play, Mexico was better off with 10 players. All he did was commit fouls, get yellow cards and on the rare occasions he actually touched the ball, he was useless. He's garbage, glad we're rid of him.

mexico will get around the USA's "defend & counter" strategy when they spend each training session thinking about the USA without carring about any other team they are facing.

this is what they USA does. everytime they have a national team practice they focus on mexico which is why they beat them in the copa oro. all the other little s.hit teams the USA faced were a joke. but when they play against south american teams they get pwn3d for wasting their whole time on mexico.

mexico needs a stronger midfield general. their playmakers tend to be on the wings leaving a rather weak midfield. they also need a more consistent presence at striker. borgetti is good but getting on in years and could use someone else up there with him.
i'm puzzled why sanchez doesn't seem to be playing kikin very much. he was very effective in the world cup under la volpe. torrado doesn't get much playing time either. he is a good midfield presence.

By playing at Estadio Azteca. That seems to be Mexico's most effective strategy for beating the USA.
