Both. I probably just take things at face value first because it's much easier to judge a book by it's cover than it is to sit down and read the book (look beneath the surface) more often.

At first you have to take things at face value but later on you have to go deep beneath the surface. Also this depends on what you are referring to.

Oh man, how much time I wasted looking beneath the surface of things only to find there was nothing there! Now that I am older I go with my first impression, as do most people even though they claim to analyze. Make a good first impression, that's my advice.
