I just buy electrical timers. You can get them for $10 or less. Just set it for when you wake up and go to bed. Then you never have to worry about it.

Yes you can, it is recommended that you turn out all the lights in the room and other rooms close to the fish tank at night so your fish can get some sleep. The fish need a day time and night time just like any other animal, especially when it comes to sleep. Fish only sleep when it's dark.

Short answer? Yes.

Long Answer? Yes, fish need sleep to. You should give them a simulated night time in order for them to more easily relax. My suggestion is to only run your tank light 8-12 hours a day. It gives fish the required light they need to be active and healthy, but it also gives them relaxation time, reduces the energy bill for your residence, and can reduce the amount of heat produced in the room your fish tank resides in.
