Different model laptops have vastly different battery run times- some machines can go for 2 hours on battery, others can go 4 hours, while others will be exhausted after only 1 hour of use. Generally speaking, units with more powerful processors and bigger screens use more power and will run for a shorter period of time than less powerful machines.
Now if your laptop battery is dying while the machine isn't in use, then your battery is shot and needs to be replaced. Over time batteries do lose their ability to hold a charge, but that takes years.

I have the same series of laptop, it is definitely a battery problem but if the battery had worn down it should still have some power if even for just for a few minutes. And you would have noticed its battery time gradually reducing. Dell also has a warning when the battery needs to be replaced. Because it dies instantly it is as if the battery isn't connected at all. I would suggest checking the contacts to the battery. They should look clean, erosion (rare) could cause contacts to stop working. Or it could just be a loose connection, Pop the battery out and back in and try it, maybe apply pressure to force it onto the contacts. If the battery has contact problems you'll likely need to replace, if it is on the laptop side you'll likely need to take it in for repairs.

Sounds like you battery is about done for. It happens because of the way they work, after a number of recharges, it will not hold as much charge as it did when it was new. Its common- ask anyone who has an ipod what happens after a few years...
Just get a new battery if you need it. Amazon usually has good deals with authentic products.

How old is your battery?
It might be time to get a new battery if it is old.
