adversity:. whether to overcome or let ride this is the single aspect of life that makes you or me who we are. when it's time to do the right thing every one knows what should be done, but what we do is most often the path of least resistance or short term gain at anothers expense.. recognizing this and having the desire to move the bar up [even if you have to take a step down to do it] is the mark of a successful person no matter how rich or poor
empathy: if you can step into anothers shoes and find want give a hand up not a hand out.
honesty: if you can be honest with yourself first you will have it in you to become honest in your dealings with others [i suspect when most of us look into a mirror we seldom like what we see but with forgiveness we can learn tolerance for ourselves and others.
responsibility/ accountability : for our own actions and to those we love [for me this has been the most powerful cause for change]
i hope these miscellaneous ramblings are helpful, if not please consider them the rantings of an old fart.

Only you can make yourself change.
If you are talking about someone else changing, and you're wondering why, it's because they are growing and have different values.
If you are talking about changing yourself, you have to have the will to change. You have to really want to improve your lot in life, and be willing to go to any lengths to get it. Some of us rely on a 'higher power' to get to where we want to be.
Be patient, change takes time, buts pays handsomely in the end.
Good luck.

many many things.
a certain event in their life. near death experiences. Maybe a certain person they meet and has a great influence on them. faith, the sudden longing for the Lord. Their own self realization that they can be a better person.
the list really does go on.

life's experiences. knowing one's self and knowing what you want out of life. doing what you have to do to get yourself to the point of being truely happy. all of life is a learning experience. as much sh*t as i've gone through, i wouldn's change any of it-because then i wouldn't be who i am.

number one is my faith and i've just learned to love and take care of myself. it is more of opening your eyes that things happen for a reason and you need to adapt to that change.
