It can ONLY be done through a router. I recently thought I was smart by buying 2 modems only to find out that connecting both will only cancel the connection out for both computers.
So it's worth the $30 to buy a standard, cheap router (wired or wireless depending on your needs). Most support 4 computers and they're incredibly easy to set up and you could be up and running in about 30 seconds.

Unless they have radically changed the type of modem provided, you can only connect one computer to the internet at a time. If you are interested in setting up a home network, you will need a router or hub. I am by no means a computer geek, but I was a trainer at call center that provided technical support for BellSouth (now AT&T) DSL. I would also suggest visiting their online help site. Hope this helps some!

By putting either a switch or router between the PCs and the DSL line. Either can be bought cheaply, and you can eliminate the extra cables should you go with a wireless router.

It all depends. If your modem has more than one "Ethernet" port, then yes you can.
If you have only one Ethernet port on it, you'll need to buy a switch, connect the switch to that one Ethernet port of the modem, and then connect. This would be like plugging in a power strip to your power outlet, in order to give power to more electronic devices. But in your case, it would be allowing more computers to connect to the Internet. You would also need to make sure that your modem can do 'NAT'.

You could also use a modem splitter if the wireless thing scares you.
