I would only like a male and female. I have heard some dwarfs only get to 3 inches or so. Please supply types that are usually available at most petco's and pets stores.

You will never have a chance of finding a Dwarf Cichlid in your Petco. If you want them, you have to make the effort to order them from a local fish store (the store will place the order and you will pay for the fish). Small Cichlids include Rams, Apistos, Brevis, Ocellots (Gold Ocellotus), and Multifasciatus. They will all prefer sand (not gravel) and all have different water parameters. They should not be mixed with other fish, so only one species per tank. If you wanted babies, get a male and a female Brevis, you could probably fit 2 pairs of Brevis in a 10 gallon, but make sure you provide plenty of shells. Be sure to research each fish before you buy, if you don't, it could be an expensive mistake... Good luck!

most petcos will not carry these fishes, you will have to find a specialiy store or online.

Apositogammas are a group of small dwarf south american cichlids that are colorful and generally peaceful.

They will be harder to find and generally alittle more expensive(30 -50 dollars for a pair isnt uncommon)

Other cichlids will need much larger tanks.

Petsmart does have definately cichlids
At least the one I go to
You can put none of the cichlids in a 10 gallon, even the blue ram needs a MINIMUM of a 20 gallon tank
Here is a site with all the cichlids available

Read up on each of them and what their needs are

Hope that helps
Good luck

Rams are the only cichlid you will find at petco. Smaller stores may have curviceps, keyholes, or apistos.

Rams are quite peaceful as far as cichlids go and don't get that big:
