During the last 27 years, the size of the US government has doubled. Federal expenditures totaled $590 billion in 1980. Adjusted for inflation that amount would be $1.444 trillion today, or $3.9 billion per day.
The current federal budget stands at $2.9 trillion, or $7.9 billion per day.
Adjusted for inflation, it is costing more than twice the amount of money to run the federal government today than it did 27 years ago.
In case those numbers escaped you, let me repeat. The government is spending today $7.9 billion per day, every day of the week. Based on the same dollar value, the government spent only $3.9 billion per day in 1980.
What could possible be so different today that requires twice as much money to fund the federal government today as it did 27 years ago?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 24, 2004

Under Bush, Federal Spending Increases at Fastest Rate in 30 Years

Since 2001, even with record low inflation, U.S. federal spending has increased by a massive 28.8% (19.7% in real dollars)—with non-defense discretionary growth of 35.7% (25.3% in real dollars)—the highest rate of federal government growth since the presidencies of Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson. This increase has resulted in the largest budget deficits in U.S. history, an estimated $520 billion in fiscal year 2004 alone. Furthermore, the projected spending for 2005 is a conservative estimate, since it doesn’t include at least $50 billion for the 2005 cost of the Iraq occupation.

Nice graph there. You'll notice the small government Republicans really had a hand in growing government. I still see claims Republicans are for "smaller" government.

You bet we have. It's gotten too large and way out of hand. Our federal government has more power than it's ever had and much to the demise of it's citizens, we have politicians in office who should be ousted and replaced.

As is obvious by my name, I support term limits. I also propose that we turn much of what the feds had taken over and give that power to the individual states. Allow the voters to decided for themselves what is right and what is wrong.

If we want to prosper and grow, it's time to take control of our government!

And just think the democratic candidates for president want to collect more taxes and add more programs especially government controlled health care and immigration reform where 25 million immigrants are giving full benefits.

You can't go back. When the morons from the 1930's decided it was the government's job to ensure the social well being of the country and allowed the Unconstitutional enactment of social security, they started a growing snowball of federal government control that now can't be stopped.

No. Just too irresponsible. They have all the money in the world to raise their own salaries and feed their expense accounts, yet when it comes to programs to help the common working man the answer is " we will have to raise you your taxes to help you. We spent all your tax money helping ourselves". As one person said to the candidates at the last debate" when it came to raising your own salaries it took no debate , you just voted yes, why did it take so much time to debate and vote on raising the minimum wage and help the people who actually need help".

Yes, our government is entirely too large. And both the Republicans and Democrats only want to make it even bigger.

It's time for a change.

Absolutely! The government is FAR too large, and runs government agencies that overstep the bounds of the constitution.

Income taxes have given the government the resources to overexpand its boundaries, and in order to solve this problem, the income tax needs to be abolished and politicians forced to trim the size of government.

There should be no federal department education, no welfare, no department of agriculture... among other things.

The government does not have the authority to regulate these areas.

FDR was the worst president in our history.
