The difference between a laptop and a notebook computer is size, or what is known in the industry as "form factor". Laptops are the larger products, including some of the latest models with HD wide screens. Notebooks have smaller screens, are lighter and are smaller overall. There are also sub-notebooks, which eliminate peripherals, such as DVD or CD drives (use external periperals).

Laptops and Notebooks are different, they are exactly what the name says it is.
A laptop is designed to sit on your lap, usual has fans on back or some form of exhaust for heat that does not go down to your lap.
Notebooks are designed with fans on the bottom, to be placed on a flat surface, so the exhaust has somewhere to go.
This is what I have noticed while dealing with notebooks/laptops. There is also this definition, "Back in the beginning years of manufacturing, laptops used to be a little less than 10 pounds and notebooks were known for being even a little more light weight in size."

Depends on the vendor, they started out calling them laptops for the obvious reason that they can set in your lap. Now they are typically called notebooks because they are about the size of a notebook. The term is interchangeable in most cases.

They are essentially very similar. In some cases it may just be a question of semantics.

A Laptop has many built in features.

But a Notebook is a lighter machine - a small Laptop -
less "stuff" in it -
think of your 3 ring binder [ergo > notebook]

But still an "ice cream"cone - smaller and less in it.

Some companies use the term "notebooks" instead of laptops. They are basically the same thing. Just another word to describe its portability.

They are moving away from calling them laptops as there can be health issues with using them on your lap. And most people use them on a desk anyway. So they started calling them notebooks. Or else the aliens are making them do it!
