Now that is an excellent question.... When the first phoenix was created is was at first created to be as large as a dragon and it was created to be greater than man-kind as well as help man-kind to grow in wisdom.. But over time it was was made smaller and smaller so that man-kind could be its equal and later on its master... Also at first man-kind was to served the phoenix and be rewarded for their services... Now its all opposite.. And the real stories about the phoenix have been lost and are just not read any more... But they still exist and can be found at your local library or by using you computers search engine.. I do hope that you take the time to read some of the very early stories of the phoenix I really enjoy reading them and I am sure that you will too.........

a bird. Dragons have scales, except for the mexican amphitheatre, but u'd tell that was a dragon by look. A phoenix also has the dragon characteristic of fire, but it has a beak, talons, etc. It is also called the 'bird of immortallity' which gives an obvious hint towards being a bird.

It is in the bird family, if you had to classify it. Though the fire thing confuses many people. Basically, it's just a bird that constantly regenerates itself when it 'dies'.

"The phoenix is a mythical sacred firebird in ancient Egyptian mythology, and in myths derived from it."
It's also in my Dragonology book, but it is listed as a bird.
