I'd say the characteristics every good CEO should have are:

1) Positive motivational impact on employees. It's criticall for employees to inspired and motivated by their leader. A good CEO knows how to rally the troops and will make it his/her priority to make frequent contact with the rank and file employees to remind them that they are all important.

2) Solid understanding of "the big picture". A good CEO understands the current environment of his/her industry and will be able to mobilize resources to quickly capitalize on new trends.

3) Technical expertise. It's important to always have technical expertise in your industry. The ideal CEO of a hospital would be a former doctor. The ideal CEO of a semiconductor company should be an engineer by trade. The CEO of an investment bank should have been an analyst or an investment banker in the past.

I can't quote him exactly, but Dwight Eisenhower said words to this effect: Leadership is the ability to get people to do what you want, when you want, and how you want because THEY WANT TO. I think that speaks to achieving your own greatness by inspiring those around you to their own greatness.
