I have had this forever and just thought...hmmm, I have no idea.
I know I can bring it to a coin appraiser, but I did not know if there is an easy to spot way to tell.

Drop it and listen to what is sounds like. Fake ones sound clinky. Most fakes of this particular coin look fake. Many also say "COPY" in small letters on the back at the bottom. This is a commonly copied coin. Go to a coin dealer and they can teach you more. As you gain experience, you will know more.

You can also upload a photo of the coin or bill to an on-line album and post a link here.
There are a lot of people here who would be able to tell you a lot about a coin from just a picture.
If if looks like it is a real coin you still need to go to an appraiser but then you will know what to ask him.
I have never heard of Fugio "Continental Curency" and I have traveled a lot in Europe, it does not sound like western European money. (But I am no expert.)

Added,
I did a quick search, and it seems an old 'currency' so I should not know about it at all.
