it is ok to use the name, but not to copy the logo or style of lettering used by the college. i work for a university and they have a department dedicated to licensing the logos and such for commercial use. they are very reasonable for most uses.

They also have a community of designers that can offer advice on starting a new business and selling/making DIY items. They have a section on copyright infringement.

Contact your college and ask them for permission, that should be the easiest way.

It could be trademark infringement. They probably won't do anything if you're just making it for yourself, though.

There was a case in Ohio, where the Ohio State University made and sold clothes that said "Ohio" on them, and they lost a lawsuit claiming trademark infringement brought against them by Ohio University.
