A couple of times I have left old fruit in my kitchen garbage and after a couple of days I get fruit flies swarming around. Where do they come from?

The reason you see so many fruitflies is because they can reproduce at a fast rate in about 7 days they emerge and just 10 -12 hours after they do they are able to reproduce.......Under the ideal temperatures and conditions......extra food etc. within weeks you could be infested and most of these flies live for up to a month

........of course there are different types of fruitflies some can reproduce faster Im only basing my comparison on the common fruitflies which are used in laboratories.

Most likely a few wonderers wandered into your garbage and started to reproduce

Yeast (also present in fruits which causes fermentation) is the diet of choice of the fruit flies- that is the important thing to bear in mind. Most fruit flies are native to the areas where they could just appeared from outdoors once they smelled ripening fruits.

Fruit flies do not favor unripe fruits but they could have come in contact to it and could have laid eggs in there. The fruit you are bringing in your home could have such eggs which turn as hundreds of larvae on the following day. In a few days,by the time your fruit has well ripened - tada, the larvae had hatched and turned as flying fruit flies!

Once these fruit flies had "settled" in your house they can live on the slime inside the drain, on the sour mop, cracks on the floor sustaining themselves on various nutrients - particularly those that are fermented.

The bad thing with this fruit flies- they breed prolifically, thus their residency in ones home will be annoying.

Interesting side note - the observation of this effect (that the flies just seem to appear) let to it being common knowledge for most of our history that flies spontaneously generated out of refuse. This led to the worship of flies and vermin as deities in some cultures.
