They are itchy tiny, red bugs that get on you from tall weeds and they make you itch for a week. They like to get on the tender areas of your body, and they really itch.

Welcome to Missouri! Home of the Chiggers and No-See-Ums.
Ahhh, to sit on the front porch and watch the fireflies and dragonflies, feeling the cool breeze wafting across your face, sipping the beverage of your choice - only to find your legs starting to burn and itch and the more you try to ignore them, the more violent they become.
Oh, and the homemade 'remedies' you just gotta try to relieve the pain... ice, lotion, honey, rubbing alcohol, tea bags... Great creatures, these chiggers.

Living on a farm we constantly got chiggers, especially around the ankle area......arrgghhhh!! They itch SO bad. Then the dogs would bring them in and we had to "bomb" the house to get rid of them. Nasty little critters. One of my stepdaughters decided she was going to go sleep under a tree one day and came in COVERED in chigger bites. She didn't really care for the treatment of an alcohol bath. But, she never did it again during chigger season. Missouri is The Chigger State (I think). LOL!!! Coming from Mnnesota (The Black Fly & Mosquito State) I can't really decide which I hate more!!

Yes, at least twice when I was in the Army in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. I went on leave to Virginia Beach. Swimming in the salt water ocean killed them little SOBs off and stopped the itching pretty quick. I had brown marks for about a year afterwards.
The second time, I made my own salt water in the bath tub and soaked in it.

never had 1, but i live in Kenya and they're verrrry common only we call the jiggers. a lot of people who live in the country are besieged by them and they tend to deform feet rather badly if not removed coz they get in under the toenails or between the toes.
one of the highlights of my comedy week was that a well known former kenyan model has started a 'Get rid of Jiggers' campaign. It's sad coz it is a serious subject, but my goodness! why would anyone want to spearhead this as a national cause when we kenyans have so much else to help (poverty, lack of water to about half our population, women's rights...). enough of a home country rant from me!
