Nope, not harmful to the fish at all. They will fill up your tank though. Once they get to be a problem you will want to remove some. There are several treatments available on the market, but I wouldn't suggest you use any of them. Most are rather tough on your fish and especially tough on your plants.

I would suggest you use a more natural approach. Use a small plastic container with a snap top lid. Poke several holes all around the container that are big enough for the snails but too small for the fish in your tank. Add a piece of lettuce and a handful of gravel from your tank. Place this in the tank over night. In the morning you can remove the container and you will be amazed how many snails you will remove. Do this several times in a row and you will really cut down the numbers in the tank. Then just do it once a week or so to keep them under control.

we have the same problem in our tank, we done the lettuce trick and got quite a few but decided to buy a clown loach and already we are seeing less snails. You can buy a snail killing liquid but that is seen as a last resort as it affects the water levels so not really a good option........They won't poison the fish but don't look nice and breed very quickly

i found 1 in my tank and thought it was cute! then there were hundreds,- no exaggeration!!!!
i wanted rid of them even though they only seemed to eat the plants and breed. don't know about harming the fish.
i took out the plants and replaced them with silk ones,- they look quite real once there in! i also used snail treatment, although it didn't seem to work.
i also had to empty my tank and take the snails out by hand, ewww! and used the snail treatment sparingly to clean the tank and gravel.

the best buy, a clown loach! since i was advised this was good for getting rid of snails.
i haven't seen one since!
hope this helps.

Snails are perfectly safe for you aquarium. They will help remove algae and uneaten food. The population explosion comes from feeding too much food. If you are not leaving a bunch of food sitting on the bottom of the tank, they will not overrun your tank. They will self control their population around the amount of available food.

They wont harm your fish. In fact the snails help you clean the tank by eating the grime away.

Majicman is correct, but he left out one other option. Purchasing a small loach like the striated, skunk, Yo-yo, or the angelicus will get rid of all your snails, and provide you with a really cool scavenger as well.
