Yes. My mother, who is only 60 lives with me and I am her caregiver. I have been for 7 years now. She has MAC, COPD, Multiple mini-strokes, one big stroke, Parkinson's disease, and most recently adult onset diabetes. Although at times it's hard, I wouldn't change a thing. I'm glad I decided to take care of her, after all, she took care of me. I guess it's my turn now.

I have been in the past. When my friends son came home after a head injury and needed 24 hr.care. Don't feel guilty if you need a break make sure you get away every now and then even if it's just a couple of hours. With dementia some of the longest lasting memories are the one that shaped Your Dad into the man you know, ask him about his life while you still can it's a great bonding moment and will knock off the sharp edges that will follow. Good Luck.

I was a Caregiver and worked through the Santa Clara County Seniors Group, was paid through the Social Welfare Department. I took care of two seniors [ females ]. I was on call 24/7, I would take them grocery shopping, to the Bank, Doctors offices, to have their hair done, for walks or pushed them in wheelchairs, use to take one to Bingo twice a month and Bunco once a month. I would clean their homes and cook their meals. For each senior I was paid, for 5 days a week, 10 hours a day, I received $163. a month. Anything extra they would pay me what they could afford.
I had a van that was equipped to transfer them to where they needed to go. Took care of one for 6 years until the family placed her in a nursing home. The other I cared for 11 years until she could not be left alone anymore and was placed in a nursing home with her sister.
Four years later I took care of my parents for three years until they both passed away...
Now I am retired.
I was also a Day Care Mother before that for 5 years and cared for disabled children...

I am a self-employed care-giver and have been for 15 plus years. I love my work. Love the "old" people. Dementia--full time--would be hard--and expecially a loved one. Good luck to you
