Based on the fact that I don't know what part of the world you live in, I would just advise that she take a course, many community colleges and night schools offer them. There are many safety concerns with stained glass (toxic lead, glass shards, and hot solder irons) and a course really teaches you how to avoid accidents while perfecting your craft. There are many supplies on eBay for beginners too. Try to find a copy of "The Lazy Man's Guide to Stained Glass" it's informative, easy to read, and fun too. Good luck to your mum!

This is an option you may want to have a go at,it may also be the cheapest and easiest way.You can buy rolls of lead which are sticky backed from places like B&Q or maybe larger craft&hobbie shops. To stain the glass you can get small pots of special paint which is made for staining glass, ask at the DIY or craft/hobbie shop if they stock the stuff ,if they dont then ask them who does. You will also need a suitable sized paint brush for applying the paint.Once you have these items you will be able to create a stained glass window, provided you do have a pane of glass to stain,if you do not then you will have to see a glazier , see thomson local or your local newspaper for one , just tell them what size you want and what it is for ,it may have to be toughend glass for example. Also tell them that you want all edges machined smooth so that ther will be no chance of anyone getting cut. Now you can get started on creating a design, sit down with some paper and coloured pens and knock yourself out.One tip would be to keep it simple, remember this design will have to be replicated in your strips of lead being stuck to the glass.Try to use gental curves and straight lines ,make your design relatively abstract ,so no paddelsteamers on the mississippi o.k. Once you have a design and it is coloured matching your available pots of stain, you can finaly get started on the glass .Clean the glass, use a FINE LINE black marker pen suitable for use on glass and draw out your design. It may help with the drawing out if you create a grid over the paper design and replicate this grid on your glass , like you see in kiddies activity drawing and colouring books.Next comes the leading, all your black lines need to be replaced with strips of lead ,when you bought the lead it probably included a tool for pressing down and shapeing the lead onto the glass this will help , if not then use a cloth scrunched up to press the lead to the glass BE CAREFULL PRESSING ON ORDINARY GLASS , THOUGHEND GLASS WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO BREAK BUT NOT ORDINARY GLASS.WHEN PRESSING ,HAVE SOME THICK LEATHER GLOVES ON ,YOU ONLY NEED THEM ON FOR THE PRESSING,PLEASE BE CAREFULL.FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ON THE LEAD PACKET.Finaly ,get it painted following all instructions on the pots of stain.I think that should be everything covered ,so good luck mom.

You can usually find the lead caning at a craft store.
A easy way to do it, is to get a tube of liquid lead, I think it was called. You draw out your design on the window and then use stained glass paint to color in the sections. It might make it hard to clean, but it is an easy way.
There are also stained glass kits in the craft stores too. She might want to start there and get a feel for the process.

Modern stained glass is rubbish. If you want the real thing try reclamation yards. You can have superb ones made with real stained glass which is much less vulgar than the modern colours, but you are looking at a lot of money! It is a skilled job these days, I am sure there are courses available.
