It just seems that some of the discrimination/harrassment issues would go away if firefighters had the same regimen as police officers.

Firemen only work 3-24 hour days. They are off for four and then go back. Firemen have more equipment to clean and maintain and stock. Policemen only really use guns, no other tools.

As a rule, our shifts are 24 hours, then we go home for 48 hours. We (unlike police officers) have the luxury (if you want to call it that) of full service firehouses, kitchens, bunk rooms etc. They are NOT the best in the world, but it allows us to function for the full shift.

Not sure how shorter shifts would reduce discrimination or harrassment, people attitudes towards others will be the same regardless of the length of shift they work.

I don't know much about firefighters, however, from what I have heard.... their shift is usually long, like 24 hours or more. Even when they are sleeping at the station they are on call. Quicker for them to hop on the truck from the station than to drive there from home.

When an officer's shift is over, he goes home because his shift is just that...over. Once the firefighter's shift is over, he can then go home.
