Most recorded cultures have shown some belief in an afterlife, but what a culture believes happens to the human soul upon demise of the physical body varies according to time and place. Ancient Greeks believed in an underworld literally located beneath the earth, with caves and cracks in the earth’s surface acting as doorways to Hades, while animistic societies believe the spirits of the dead co-exist with them, although unseen. Christianity has given us the concept of heaven and hell, with the latter becoming the eternal home of those souls damned by God because of their evil behavior.
But despite the variances in what we believe happens to the human soul, why we believe it continues is a common thread binding all of mankind. As humans, we simply don’t want to believe this life is all there is. There just has to be something else. And so we have the concept of ghosts.
The belief in ghosts is tied to the belief in the afterlife. The human form may perish, but the soul continues. A ghost is proof to those who believe that the soul has not perished but has simply gone on to the next level of existence.
However, can we know for certain that ghosts do exist and there actually is an afterlife? While we may not have concrete proof at this moment in time, we need only remind ourselves that it wasn’t that long ago we believed the world was flat, the sun and stars revolved around the earth, and the moon was made of green cheese. Just as scientists and individuals worked to disprove those commonly held beliefs, we work to prove that our belief in ghosts is valid.

Well, they aren't automatically mentally unstable. As a skeptic, I'm skeptical that mental issues explain paranormal experiences. I really don't think that's it, and I think that most people who give that knee-jerk response aren't really thinking but just reacting with a flippant answer. In my time here I have a few times answered a question where it did genuinely seem like the asker should be talking things over with a mental counselor, but that is the exception. Almost always there are much better explanations that in no way involve any kind of mental health issues. By the way, skeptics get loaded with thumbs down all the time, just for posting answers that don't support the paranormal position. The thumbs go to both believers and skeptics.

I'll try to take this from a purely logical and unbiased position.
Just because you haven't seen ghosts doesnt mean that they don't exist. Are the people, who believe, nuts? Maybe, maybe not.
In my honest opinion, everyone is 'nuts'
and in the words of Norman Bates 'We all go a little crazy, sometimes'

How do you know that you've never seen a ghost? Just because you didn't experience bone chilling terror doesn't mean a thing. You could have passed one walking down a street or sitting on a bench and didn't know it. I've seen ghosts, and I'm definitely not nuts.

No. Plenty of people have seen ghosts. Unexplainable things have been caught on audio and video - just watch an episode or two of Ghost Hunters on the Sci-Fi channel, you'll get what I'm talking about.

So you think that just because you have never seen a ghost they really don't exist.... There are many things on this earth that you have never really seen and can I assume that they don't exist because you have never see any of them in real life.............. People like you said the same thing about people that have seen a real gorilla.. They also called those people crazy and said that the gorilla does not really exist... Well guess what those same people are eating their very own word..... Just like you will be doing when you trip into the paranormal zone happen to you...........................................................

You would think so much differently if you actually saw a ghost. You're gonna feel so stupid when people like you don't believe you.
