My daughters are 9 & 11 yrs old and are involved in a community cheerleading group. their group took 1st place in a competition; and they really love doing it.
I am just looking at all avenues to cheerleading. do you recommend it? advantages? problems?

I was a cheerleader all through junior high and high school. My younger sister (now 12) has been cheerleading for a community gym for a while now.. almost 4 years. It's really good to start young. The younger, the more time to prepare for what they want in the future.

I recommend taking gymnastics as well. Most squads won't allow cheerleaders with no gymnastics experience on them (school squads). The reason is that they compete. There isn't a way to go to competition without tumbling.

Your girls should be familiar with tumbling and the 9 year old should start regularly attending a gymastics place where she can learn (if she hasn't already).

The one thing you as a parent may have is the transition from tumbling at the gym to tumbling for school squads. School squads don't have mats, they tumble on the gymnasium floor and outside on the track. This is something you and they should ALWAYS keep in mind.

Once they really really get involved, it's going to end up costing a lot of money. My sister now cheers 4 days a week for her squad. Plus competitions. That's different outfits, transportation and the fees for the gym.

Good luck - your girls will love it ♥

Pros: Your kids love it, its a great way to keep your kids active, They'll learn teamwork and sportsmanship, it can get them into a college
cons: Stunting can be dangerous if not done properly at practices keep an eye on the bases, backs and spotters if your kid is flying to make sure theyre doing it right so they dont drop your kid.

Im a cheerleader and i've been doing it for as long as i can remember, I love it its so much fun. Its alot of work though so make sure they are truly dedicated, and fyi rarlely are there injuries. flyers do get dropped but most of the time no serious injuries occur since stunt groups have multiple spots. Hope i helped =)

ok ok, here are my opinions on cheerleading.
i cheered when i was younger, and now im on my second year of varsity cheer (im a junior). Basically, cheer makes me want to end my life these days. ive had ENOUGH. it takes up wayyyy too much time. I was at cheerleading camp this summer and there were kids that were your daughters' age and they were treated like slaves, well we all were, but those girls were younger. id let them do it if they were younger, but just be prepared, because they may get sick of it.

I see nothing wrong with it at all. If it is fun for them, then I say continue. If anything, it builds some leadership abilities.

If they love it it's fine if they don't but you do then you have a problem.
It teaches them strength, teamwork, competing, endurance and to have fun

If you want them to turn into vain self-centered skanks, then go right ahead.
