I've recently found out I was pregnant, and before I found out me and my husband were painting and varnishing a room in our house. After painting i've used paint thinner to get paint off my hands (more than once). I wasn't like sniffing it or anything but I could still smell it. I'm freaking out, because i've read that paint fumes and thinners are not good for pregnant women. I'm so scared my child is going to have something wrong with it, should I have something to worry about, or should I relax??? I'm sooo scared! My husband said I should be fine, because its not like I was sniffing it everyday for like 2 weeks, and he said think about those who smoke and do drugs when pregnant and their kids turn out fine, but i'm so paranoid!!! I am by far the most paranoid person ever, i worry about everything! I don't see my OB until august 22nd because shes so busy! Please help me!

I would like to thank all of you who have given me answers. Everytime I read yourkind words it makes me feel so much better! Layla983, I would like to thank you especially, I know I have posted this question more than once and I would like to thank you for giving me a kind and very well detailed answer, I really appreciate it! As for you, kmennie, obvioulsy you have never been pregnant, because if you have been, you would understand why I am so worried for the well being of my child. And for your information i've posted this question a number of times because I like to see what kind of answers people give, and I think your answer has been by far the worst. I hope it makes you feel better that your so cold.

I know I've posted questions about possible pregnancy. But for your information, we were trying to have a baby, but (i should have put this in past questions, but i didn't know i was going to be given the 3rd degree!) the doctor told me and my husband (before we even started trying, i suspected something was wrong before we started trying) that it was possible that we may not be able to concieve and he said that we could try but it didn't look good for us. So when we were re-modeling our house i did it with the mind set I couldn't have kids (wenr off birth control because it was causing problems). And by the grace of god I got pregnant the second month of trying! So now that those of you that think i'm "full of it" you know my whole life story. Happy? Obvioulsy those of you who have nothing nice to say are on here answering questions because you have nothing better to do.

Relax. There's nothing you can do about it now. Chances are that this won't harm the baby. Your husband is right, people abuse their bodies in unimaginable ways and still can have healthy babies.

I wouldn't be too worried about it, just make sure you bring it up with your doctor when you do go. With my first pregnancy I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 12 weeks. I was dumb and in college and quite the party girl. I was also spending a quarter abroad in Ecuador when I found out. Imagine all of the things that I did wrong for my baby before I knew. I was a drinker and a smoker, I was taking malaria pills (very dangerous for baby), I was taking dangerous hikes in the Andes, horseback riding, coming into contact with foreign germs and parasites, etc. etc. When I found out I was pregnant, I was terrified for my baby. Look at all I had done wrong in that first trimester. But, from then on, I did everything by the book... I would never want to harm my child. He turned out fine and is quite smart if I do say so myself! Anyway, babies are tough... hopefully it won't be a big deal. There's nothing you can do about it until your doctor's appointment, so try not to spend all of your time worrying about because that is definitely not good for your baby. Good luck to you and I'm hoping that all is well for you and your little one!

You've posted this several times, I know I've replied at least 3 myself. If you're that worried, call other doctors. Some will get you in earlier. Or call & speak to a nurse at your doctors office, they will talk to you even if you've not been seen.
My non-medical opinion is that you're fine. While I didn't use paint thinner on my hands, we painted, varnished, & used paint thinner in our new house when I was 11 weeks along with my OB's blessing. In early pregnancy almost everyone does "harmful" things. I took medications for being sick for a few weeks, all the medications I took turned out to be known to cause miscarriage in early pregnancy. I was also drinking at time in my early pregnancy. My baby is perfectly healthy.
The amount of stress you're putting yourself though right now, I think, is more harmful that anything you've already done. Call a nurse at your OB's office since we can't make you feel better, or call around other offices to see if they can get you in sooner. GOod luck.

1st timer here, right? You are fine and so is your baby. Like you said, you weren't "huffing" the thinner. Doctors warn against things such as this so they're not done in excess and women know what to look for to help keep their baby healthy. There is a very, very small chance that using the paint thinner on your hands is going to cause any harm to your baby. Speak with your Ob/Gyn when you get there and just let him/her know that you used the product but only to clean your hands and it was before you even knew you were pregnant. He/she will most likely tell you that everything is fine and to just steer clear of such chemicals as much as possible now that you know that you're expecting.
Everything will be fine... good luck in parenting!

You're fine.
I was still in my highschool woodshop class all throughout my pregnancy and I was surrounded by paint thinners and varnish, etc..
My doctor said it won't do anything unless I was sniffing it from a rag (like some person trying to get high off of it) or was surrounded by it for weeks.
Personally I was in the varnish/laquer/paint thinner room twice a week for about 2 months and nothing happened.
My baby girl is still fine.
Don't worry.
Besides, if you JUST found out you're pregnant then it's too early to do anything.
And one time definitly won't hurt.
Relaxxxx

nothing to worry about from the ambient fumes! And nothing to worry about rinsing your hands off once or twice! Stay away from it now. If your really that worried about it. I have three healthy sons, their mother repainted everything all the time. Even when she was pregnant. And yes paint thinner was involved. So don't give it another thought you'll be fine. Next time you get a checkup. Ask your doctor.

I think you should be fine, when you go in ask her if she will perform an early ultrasound so you can see how the baby is doing, before I found out I was pregnant with my son, I performed x rays and was so scared that I may have done damage, it almost consumed me, but everything was fine I had a beautiful baby boy,

I read your other questions etc. apparently you were trying to have a baby so you knew at the time you did this there was a possibility of your being pregnant when you did this. You have been asking this same question for over two weeks. Its really hard to give you a heartfelt answer when I think there is a possibility of you being full of it. Also, if you are serious, seek psychological help!!! Your paranoia will not be a good thing raising a family.

You need to relax first. You stressing over this is also stressing your baby. If you are that worried, go see your doctor now. You can't undo what's already happened, so Id recommend taking your prenatal vitamins, eat right and get your exercise in, you should be fine. Good luck & Congrats!

To be honest, the amount of exposure you have had is very small, and you shouldn't be too worried about it. Okay, I'm telling a pregnant women not to worry- can you say mission impossible!?
People have done far worse things to their bodies knowing they were pregnant at the time, and I think that you are probably going to make yourself ill worrying about this so much. Please try to relax!
Congratulations on your pregnancy!

You and baby are perfectly fine my dear.
The embryo is self contained and lives off a yoke sac for the first 8 weeks, until then, there is not placenta. Its not until about 8-10 weeks that the baby shares your blood and all that you put into your body.
Everything is fine.
