I have a 2002 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 ltr engine, Automatic trans, 245,000 miles here's what's wrong...

From stop~ If I take off normally it sputters & bucks when it switches gears, and does so until I let off the gas. However if I ease into it it gets to higher speed w no problem, and runs great. Anytime I 'floor' the gas pedal it bucks, when I ease off and ease into it its good.... NOW at cruising speed when I 'floor' it as to pass someone, it BOGGS DOWN, (and not quite backfires but almost) at this point when I take my foot completely off the gas I feel a jerk & notice the tack revs high for a moment then goes into normal range. So far I changed the MAP sensor- and both shift sensors... HELP... I dont mind spending a few bucks to fix the problem on my own, but dont wanna go to a pro & get ripped off either, I know the car is old (mileage wise) but its in great shape, and runs grea until now...and I bet its something real simple... ANY IDEAS?

sounds like the timing belt i would take it to a shop for 50 bucks and have them tell you what is wrong cheaper than changing part after part if it is backfiring you r having valve or timing related issues

The 1st 3 guys have all good points.

The Intrepid has a history of timing chain issues. I would get your timing checked, as well as inspect the chain, tensioners, etc.

Clean the injectors... you can pay a shop to take them out and clean them, or you can try using Chevron Techron concentrate in the fuel tank (or Red Line SI-1 or SI-2).

I'm not sure how to check the cat tho. It makes sense. When you demand some juice, you are trying to flow more air thru the entire system. I however think if your cat was clogged, it would set off the CEL... since you'd get a build-up of exhaust gases near the O2 sensor.

Has anything been done to the injectors? They may be firty, also the fuel filter? After all these miles, you must have changed the plugs too.
