As long as Manny Ramirez doesn't switch over to the Yankees in the latter part of his career, his number will be retired and he is a shoo in for the hall of fame.

Whoever said Varitek doesn't realize the standards the Red Sox use for retiring numbers. The player must be a Hall of Famer, have played at least 10 years in Boston, and normally should retire the with Red Sox. The Sox hired Carlton Fisk as an honorary coach or something to have an excuse to retire his number. Varitek is a good player, but he won't make the Hall of Fame, so no chance he'll have his number retired.
My guess is Ortiz will make it. Manny will probably finish his career elsewhere. There are other guys, like Beckett, Pedroia, Papelbon, Youkilis, and Matsuzaka who are off to good starts to their careers, but are a long long way from the Hall of Fame. It's way too early to say anything about them.

Kevin Youkillis if he continues to play well for the Red Sox for many years. He just seems like a Red Sox guy through and through. Another posability is Ortiz because he is a great homerun hitter and is Mr. Clutch in the playoffs.
However one of the requirments for Red Sox #s to be retired is for that player to come back and work for the Red Sox after retirement. I heard that when I went on the tour of Fenway Park in 2006.

Red Sox do not get great players? Umm, Manny Ramirez is not a great player? Ortiz? Pedro Martinez? Josh Beckett? Did you forget the possiblity of retiring Roger's number? No one has had his number since he left. If Manny stays with the sox and retires, which is a big MAYBE as we know Manny and his moods, he is a definite hall of famer and the Sox will retire his number for sure. Pedro is also a good chance...Many possibilities.

boston has not really had any great players since ted williams and carl yaztremski, so they are not going to be retiring any numbers anytime soon. now dont get me wrong, i am not knocking the red sox although i am a yankee fan, but boston just does not ever get truely great players to play in boston. again, this is not saying that boston is not a good team or has not had some good teams, but when boston does well, its from a lot of decent players, but no great players.

Daisuke Matsuzaka will have his number retired if he plays the rest of his career with Boston. He has a six year contract and he won't be traded. His numbers aren't Cy Young winning yet, but they are still great. He will only improve in the seasons to come.
