By washing it once in a while with the water hose. Nothing else really.

In order to completely stop the maggots, your going to need to get rid of the flys which lay the eggs. They sell those fly strips at the department stores, so I suggest either putting them near the doors leading in and out of the house, or in the kitchen and other rooms where flies seems to be a problem (not very nice looking..) Afterwards, clean and disinfect the can with some bleach and baking soda, or a store bought product, rinse thoroughly with hot water and allow to dry thorougly. I suggest buying a new can with a lid on it, to help with the flies getting into the can. Hope this helps!

I took my trash can outside (after removing the bag and any loose trash stuck in the bottom, mine was GROSS) Then I took the hose and filled it up after pouring some lysol household cleaner stuff in it. Then I let it sit for a half hour, dumped out all the water, and sprayed it as hard as I could with the hose. Then I took a scrubber and scrubbed it as much as I could. After it looked clean, I filled it up with water and cleaner again. Then I let it sit for fifteen minutes. Then I dumped it out and filled it with just water, to rinse it out. It took forever, but the cans looked AMAZING!!! (and It will get rid of your maggots)

I triple bag any meat or meat trimmings so they won't breed flys and maggots. If you get some in there then just pour 1 cup bleach and fill you can the rest of the way with water.

1) Clean the trash can with fresh liner.
2) Prevention. All meat/blood items from cooking, rinse blood out prior to garbage can. Such as the foam/liner under meat, pour water on & squeeze out 2-3 times prior to garbage can.
3) fly spray each fresh liner for added protection.
4) keep lid on can and/or dispose of waste more frequent.

Wash with a solution of 1 capful of bleach to 1 gallon of water once a weeks, and keep a lid on.

maggots are usually caused from rotting meat, or something dead. so wash your can out once in awhile, and if you dump bad meat or something in it, put it in the can on garbage day. or wrap it and rewrap in in seran wrap if you have to put it in the garbage. just keep the flys off it, because they are the culprits that lay the maggots in the meat

don't forget to rinse the tuna residue out of the can before you throw it away... people forget that it's also a meat product that can produce maggots... same with any canned meat, really.

after the trash is out of it take a hose or a bucket with hot soapy water and bleach, you will never see them again.........then spray Lysol in it.
