Gear reduction is a lever in circular motion. One gets advantage in force while loosing in speed.

For example 1:6 reduction means that the ratio of gear 1 to gear 2 is 1 to 6 or

n/m=1/6
n - number of teeth of gear 1
m - number of teeth of gear 2

Since they must have the same size teeth or number of teeth per length is the same the ratio of their radii must be also 1:6. In this way belt pulley are similar to gears, however they can operate at a distance from each other joint by a drive belt.
