Has a US Robotics starter kit wireless router and USB adapter but the kids have snapped the adapter. DO I have to find an identical one or are others compatible? It is a 54mbps adapter/802.11g if that means anything to anybody!

Any brand of wireless adapter will work. Look for one that is 802.11 G or 802.11 N compatible.

any adapter should work. The wireless router should connect to any other desktop/laptop/adapter

No, you should not have to find an indentical one.
USB wifi connections are so common you can get a range of alternatives very cheaply these days.

there should be some compatible and you just put it in
just make your there the same size mbps=thats just the max speed for the amount of uploads and downloads it can do
